G'day everyone.
We set sail from Port Lockroy late yesterday evening, heading down the
beautiful Lemaire Channel towards our new destination, Vernadsky
station, the Ukrainian base. Arriving at about 11pm, we set about the
stressful task of anchoring the yachts in the channel behind the
station. Finally completing this at around 1:30am, we hit the hay in
anticipation of our international soccer match: the Aussies vs. the
charismatic Ukrainians. We woke late, gaining a much needed sleep-in
before heading out on a morning trek to Wordie House. A short walk from
the yachts, we broke out in an all-in snowball fight in the falling
snow, a warm-up for the impending match...
After a hard fought and extremely entertaining game, scrambling through
the snow and falling over (which unfortunately I have to say we lost
6-4, much to the delight of the host side) we gratefully accepted a hot
shower and a tour of the base. Nicoli, the base's diesel mechanic,
showed us some great little magic tricks, whilst Igor the biologist gave
a presentation on his work, specifically focusing on the
seals in Antarctica.
It's been a busy day, but an extremely enjoyable one, and we'll all
sleep well, looking forward to more ski tours and base tours tomorrow.
Having a blast,
From Jackson and all the crew.
